High Frequency Words are common words that appear most often in language. These types of words are also sometimes called ‘sight words’ as they are words that children are taught to recognise ‘on sight’. This is an important part of a child’s education, as it enables children to identify words at a glance and allows them to read with greater confidence and speed. High-frequency words can often be difficult for learners to grasp at first as they often have an abstract meaning, rather than words that be easily related to real objects like ‘mouse’ and ‘car’. In addition, some high-frequency words can be sounded out using phonics and are therefore decodable, but some do not follow the common phonetic spelling rules. We hope that every child knows all the words in the list relating to their year group as this will help with their reading in all areas of our curriculum. |
