INTENT: What are we trying to achieve with our curriculum?
At Landywood we strive to ensure that all of our pupils receive a progressive and enriching broad curriculum that interweaves elements of English and Mathematics.
Our aim is to deliver a curriculum that is progressive in skills and knowledge, and relevant to our children. Whilst doing this, we ensure that we continually provide memorable learning experiences that engage and motivate pupils in becoming independent and life-long learners and equip pupils with transferable skills to grow as active, confident, reflective and engaged citizens as illustrated in our Vision Tree.
Our curriculum enables all of our pupils to:
Be determined, resilient and confident learners who take pride in their work
Be creative, critical thinkers who thrive from challenge, both independently and as a part of a team
Be responsible and caring, making a positive contribution to both the school and the wider community
Experience enrichment opportunities that develop the whole child by supporting learning where curiosity knows no bounds
Understand the importance and demonstrate aspects of a healthy and active lifestyle
Acquire the knowledge skills and attitudes to become successful and tolerant learners
Develop a love of learning through the outdoor environment
IMPLEMENTATION: How do we deliver our curriculum?
Our carefully created and regularly reviewed curriculum offers exciting and challenging opportunities, allowing all pupils to develop their knowledge and understanding of the local and global communities.
We collaboratively plan for the needs of all pupils by ensuring the pupil is at the heart of all learning. We do this through high levels of challenge, progress, engagement, questions, assessment, evaluation and response.
Learning and Teaching
We consistently deliver exciting and engaging lessons which reflect our local context and the needs of all of our pupils.
Through the expertise of specialist staff, all pupils receive a broad and balanced progressive learning journey through active participation.
We maximize learning using peer and collaborative approaches.
We enrich our curriculum through a range of life experiences visits, themed days and weeks, theatre groups, musical performances and welcoming visitors to ensure our pupils receive a broad knowledge and understanding of the world in which we live.
We utilise technology, through iPads and Microsoft software, in order to further enhance our curriculum and ensure that it is technologically immersive throughout our pupils’ time at Landywood
We celebrate success through a variety of ways, including Assemblies, Resilience Jars, Rainbow Certificates, Maths’ Awards, Sporting Achievements, House Points, the Lunchtime Golden Table and daily behaviour communication through our messaging service.
What does our Curriculum look like?
As Core Subjects, Maths, English and Science are at the centre of our curriculum. We place great emphasis on teaching children the skills to enable them to apply their learning across our Creative Curriculum.
‘Find out Fridays’ are another key component within our curriculum design. Geography, History, Art and Design and Design and Technology are all taught through the theme-based approach of our Creative Curriculum. The subjects are taught discretely, within a cross-curricular theme each Friday. This is in order to provide the subjects enough time to be taught which gives our children an in-depth progressive learning experience.
As outlined above, the time allocations for these subjects are grouped together as they are interchanged on the Friday within the curriculum themes.
Life Education, RE, PE, Music, Computing and MFL are all taught as independent lessons, with the use of some specialist teachers. These are all planned progressively in order for pupils to systematically build upon their previous skills and knowledge and to develop their learning.
In addition to this, computing is weaved and integrated throughout our curriculum to maximise learning opportunities. Throughout school, we have iPads in each classroom and pupils also have access to an iPad scheme, where they can purchase their own iPad in school. The use of these devices throughout school enables us to use Showbie, to develop technological and computing skills, whilst also supporting and enabling cross-curricular links across the entire of our curriculum.
The Zones of Regulation is an approach used to support the development of self-regulation in children. All the different ways children feel are categorized into four coloured zones. Children who are well regulated are able to be in the appropriate zone at the appropriate time. The aim is to be ready to learn and in the green zone but children also know that it is okay to be in a different zone, we just need to use our strategies to ‘get back to green’. Curriculum Maps
Our Curriculum Maps are designed to map out the key subjects skills and key concepts (knowledge, understanding and breadth of study). These concepts and skills are covered as part of the theme, whilst other subject learning are inter-woven, where appropriate, with an emphasis on creativity (e.g. use of the arts, creative skills). The applied use of English, Maths, Computing and Life Education allows opportunities for integrating and applying skills within the context of the theme. Individual themed maps are available for each year group on their year group page. Please find our whole school theme map below.
At Landywood, we understand the importance of individual subjects within our curriculum. As a result, each subject has its own Intent, Implementation and Impact. Subject leaders are responsible for each area of our curriculum, ensuring that pupil’s receive a broad, balanced, progressive and purposeful educational diet, appropriate to their needs and our local context.
Aspects of our Curriculum
Our curriculum is based on 6 aspects which link closely to the Early Years curriculum are:-
My Communication
My Thinking
Me and My Body
How My World Works
Me and My Community
My Creativity
There are overlaps between our curriculum aspects and subjects on the National Curriculum. However, our curriculum aspects are designed to offer something totally distinct to enable adaptation to support all children’s needs.
In a similar fashion to subjects on the National Curriculum, we have identified the component “aspects” which make up each curriculum area. This is to give each curriculum area fuller definition, and to support classroom teams to plan, report, and set appropriate developmental learning intentions.

Our Golden Rule is Respect. In order to develop Resilience, Empathy, Self-Awareness, Positivity, Excellence, Communication and Teamwork (RESPECT) skills within our pupils, we have adapted the Commando Joe’s Character Education initiative. Pupils take part and complete different physical tasks and specific challenges, in small groups, using a wide range of equipment and resources, and the sessions are run by our in-house Commando Joe’s Instructors.

IMPACT: How do we know it is working?
We want our pupils to leave us as confident, resilient learners who have the foundations upon which to build as they move on to the exciting new challenge of Key Stage 3.
We ensure our curriculum enables our pupils to access an enriched and broad curriculum through robust monitoring. This is evidenced and demonstrated during learning walks, work scrutinies, pupil voice, coaching, mentoring, school council, assessment, pupil curriculum teams, CPD and working in partnership with other schools all ensure children’s learning is maximised.
Our curriculum enables our pupils to build character and we develop determined, resilient confident learners who are responsible and caring. Children leave Landywood with a sense of pride and natural enquiry about the world, having acquired the knowledge, skills and attitudes to become successful and tolerant pupils.
